Medellin, Colombia is a preferred religious tourist destination. For its many and well-preserved constructions from times of the Colony, the city is visited by thousands every year.
Some Examples are:
1. The Basilica of Our Lady of La Candelaria was the first parish in the city. Church of La Candelaria, as it’s more popularly known, is a Catholic cult temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of La Candelaria.
Built in 1767, La Candelaria is located in Medellin downtown on the eastern side of Parque Berrio, opposite the metro station.
It was restored in 1997 with the original technique and materials used at the time of its construction, and on July 31st, 1998, the building was declared a Colombian National Monument.
Made of wood and thatch, its first construction was undertaken by the priest Don Juan Gomez de Ureña, in 1649, 26 years before Medellin was erected as a Municipality. This initial construction was very poor in strength.

2. The Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) church is a temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows, located in the La America neighborhood of Medellin and belongs to the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Archdiocese of Medellin.
The building is neo-Byzantine style, its interior rectangular plan is divided into three naves. On October 26th, 1916, the priest Jose Maria Gomez blessed and laid the foundation stone of the present church, located just in front of the chapel built by Rafael Velasquez 30 years before. The construction was gradually achieved with the plans of Belgian architect Agustin Goovaerts. In the beginning they had to overcome great difficulties mainly economic, even having to suspend for a few years. However, more could the strong will of the parishioners and priests who tirelessly fought for the construction of the temple.
